Melbourne / Port Kembla, Australia — ARES Group successfully completed a complex oversize transport operationfor SUPAGAS, moving two 200 kL pressure vessels from Port Kembla to Bomaderry, NSW. The project showcased ARES Group’s expertise in oversize overmass (OSOM) logisticscustom trailer design, and specialised transport engineering, delivering a solution built on innovation, safety and precision.

To overcome tight route constraints, including multiple low bridge clearances around Wollongong, the ARES team developed a bespoke transport strategy using their M500 platform trailers. By widening the trailers and lowering each vessel’s mid-section into the trailer well, the total transport height was reduced from 5.5 metres to under 5.2 metres, ensuring safe bridge clearance and full route compliance.

Further challenges included unsuitable shipping frames and a lack of built-in tie-down points. ARES Group’s engineering and consulting division designed and manufactured custom transport frames within just four weeks, integrating a secure lashing solution that met both structural and safety requirements.

The 64 km transport route from Port Kembla to Bomaderry included tight urban streets, low-clearance areas and early-morning conditions with fog and frost. Through close coordination between ARES’ drivers, pilot cars and police escorts, both vessels arrived safely, on time and without incident.
